Sankofa Africa, a subsidiary of Sankofa Consulting, leads the firm’s work across the African continent. We partner with philanthropic organizations, nonprofits, and development actors to deliver monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL), technical assistance, and strategic advisory services across sectors including health, education, agriculture, climate and economic development.

Opportunity Overview

Sankofa Africa is expanding its roster of Africa-based consultants to support current and upcoming projects across the continent. We are seeking experienced professionals to collaborate on short- and medium-term assignments in MEL, research, and advisory services. This is not a call for a single assignment — it is an invitation to join a pool of experts from which we will draw based on country coverage, language, and technical fit.

Consultants will be engaged on a project-by-project basis, depending on expertise, availability, and client needs.

Areas of Expertise

We are seeking experienced evaluation and research professionals based in sub-Saharan Africa with the ability to conduct high-quality qualitative and quantitative data collection. Specifically:

We are particularly interested in consultants with experience in:

  • Monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) system design and implementation

  • Quantitative and qualitative research methods

  • Field-based data collection and analysis

  • Program evaluation (formative, summative, developmental)

  • Facilitation of learning and sensemaking workshops

  • Capacity strengthening for local organizations

  • Sector expertise in public health, agriculture, education, climate/environment, or economic development.

Illustrative Responsibilities

Depending on the assignment, consultants may:

  • Design and implement evaluation and research activities

  • Lead or support data collection and analysis

  • Conduct literature and secondary data reviews

  • Contribute to reports, presentations, and client deliverables

  • Facilitate stakeholder consultations and workshops

  • Provide technical and strategic advisory support

Qualifications

We are looking for consultants who bring:

  • 5–10+ years of relevant experience in evaluation, research, or related fields

  • Strong experience working in African contexts (country or regional expertise)

  • Solid analytical skills (quantitative and/or qualitative)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality outputs

  • Experience with philanthropic organizations, NGOs, or development partners is an asset

Additional Assets

  • Fluency in English required; French, Portuguese, or other regional languages strongly valued

  • Experience facilitating workshops and stakeholder engagement

  • Deep knowledge of local systems and institutions
